Actually while I was falling down at 200 km/h speed I hadn't much time to think or performing acrobatics. At 3000 m. height all I could think of was "YES"; and then I was 1500 m. down and I could now say "YES!"; and in a few minutes we were back on the solid ground so I asked "Could we do it again?"

Yeah, it was a blast.

Okay, I'm officially back and it seems that the surfing plans are suspended till next summer.

I was coughing and I had severe pain in my waist but luckily the X-ray showed that I'm fine, I just needed some time to recover. Unfortunately this means: no more beach and surf for this season.

My physiotherapist recommended me to start practicing pilates which will help my spine. I already do so and I should confess that it's not as boring as expected. I also started visiting the pool again. The feel has nothing to do with the swim in the open sea.

The Lego club surprised me this week with two news: first that is actually exists and second, the fact that there are active people who managed to organize the best Lego event in town. Yep!

Urban area including office building class A, fire station, shopping area, a castle, trains, amazing trains, lego-based vending machine, 3-D bunny and... everything you can imagine.

The constructions were touched to the tiniest detail: lego people with laptops in the offices, lego travelers with glassed of wine in the long-distance trains and groceries full of carrots, apples and cherries:

There was mechanized lego machine and every visitor got a gift: a girl or boy custom made lego-figure:

And I played, and we played. And a shark ate my lego-boy (the gift I got from the machine). And then we had to rescue him.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was disappointing. Now we got Marilyn Manson's trailer on Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll and the video seems way much better. At least Manson's Alice won't be the blonde loser Burton chose. Obviously after Dr. Parnassus Lily Cole's career is spinning in the right direction.

When we were in Italy 3 weeks ago we kept my tradition to try as many types of exotic local licorice.

One of them was scarlet red. Its package - a kind of old-school approach to design. Its price - pretty deal. So I took it. I didn't even care about its name.

Back home, it was the first thing I was eager to open and taste. I loved it. It was sweet, not too alcoholic and very rich in aroma. It is not the type of drink you would have on daily basis: it deserves your special mood to take it.

So, today the bottle official went to the glass recycle bin and for the first time before saying it fare-well, I took notice on who's the distiller and the licorice name. Lame.

Turns out that Alchermes (that's its name) is typical Florence liqueur made of sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla, and other herbs and flavoring agents. Saying "other" means that some doors should never be opened. Its scarlet color is obtained by the addition of kermes. And kermes (or cochineal) are insects. Like any other insects they don't look kinky.

Wikipedia explains that "the drink fell out of favor around the turn of the century because people discovered that a (dye from the insects) was used". Yeah. Pretty logical.

Along with that calamity I have more. It seems that Alchermes is more popular for its cooking skills adding vivid colors to pastry.

The masks during the carnival are everywhere. The prices vary from 5 EUR to 500 EUR or more. Most of the masks are handmade in Venice but cheap Chinese production can be found as well. The last days of the carnival were the big sale period and most of the items were offered at 50% off.

Murano is famous for its glass traditions. The island can be reached within a few minutes from Venice and actually Venice itself is full of Murano glass souvenir shops.

This is the first glass ring I purchased. It took me about an hour to choose one :) All glass rings are extremely big and if you have small size fingers you are lost. I desperately wanted a ring so I decided to wear it on the gloves. Later that day it slipped off, fell and broke into pieces.

The second one I bought was this one. It is big size as well but I wear it veeeery carefully now :)

Green wines (vinho verde) are perfect. I like them as much as I like the porto. So far Portugal wins the wine competition (sorry, Santorini!). The picture below shows the Gato brand. I haven't tried this one as it went to V. but its label makes me meaw with pleasure. Meaw!

Last week I went to quite fantastic event: premiere of a documentary "Angel's Club". It was telling the story of a gypsy music band Karandila Junior, youngsters between 10 and 13, kids that literary live in the ghetto of the city and their music teacher named Angel Ticheliev. In two years he manages to find funding for the band and to teach these kids to play the instruments, to be disciplined and consistent in their efforts and most of all - to enjoy the music. The band has already been invited to play in clubs in Western Europe and to many music events. After the screening of the movie the kids actually appeared on scene and played in the club. It was truly amazing!

Athens

When you see Athens today, you will understand why the Greeks insisted to have earlier elections for new government.

The city is full of ruined old buildings (and I don't speak about the buildings of the Acropolis). The capital is full of immigrants. Most of them are selling stolen watches, fake Prada purses and Police sunglasses promptly displayed on blankets on all central streets and squares. There are also beggars and street musicians that bribe you while you have dinner in any open air restaurant. It is not uncommon to see people taking drugs on the central streets or in front of an important public building.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that all big cities have immigration problems to solve but the case in Athens is major. The city stinks.

Enough said. Now back to the things that I loved:

This turtle was very friendly. All ancient sights in Athens are full of turtles (And dogs. But cats are rare - it seems that they prefer the taverns).

The party tonight is at Herodes'. The Odeon of Herodes is still used for cultural events.

But that day it rained and here is a picture of the coming clouds.

When in Athens don't forget to drop by the New museum in front of the Acropolis. It was open this July and the ticket till the end of the year is just one euro (1 euro!). Inside it is neat and tidy - I really loved it.

The whole museum is build on columns and in front of it and inside on the first floor visitors can see the ruins of large old building from 7c. AD.

Lol, and this is a picture of the museum after my camera broke. From this moment I had only the movie option.

The metro in Athens is full of displays of the ancient history. All central stations have pictures or replicas of statues, info boards with history info and so on. There are no poster ads, banners or ad screens.

Here we have a nice piece of street art.

There is the kiosk of a political party that has the sign of the communists. The words read like "Krisi. Ftoheia. Anergia. Katastoli. Antistasi" but I have no idea what does it mean. I guess it's a kind of "equal rights for all".

At night even the central streets are full of people who don’t seem happy to see you.

Of course not everything on the streets of Athens is disgusting. We saw great zoo-shop that had displayed some of the goods on the street and there among the empty bird cages and the dog snacks we saw the rabbits!

And the more I was watching them, the more I missed Hihi, and then I realized it is time to go home.

Ios

I headed to Ios full of expectations. The travel websites were promising water sports paradise and beaches full of life and entertainment.

The trip started in excitement because we took the Hellenic fast ferries and they have great boats.

At the port in Ios we rented an ATV and we headed to the north.

Pushing the gas of the ATV is exhausting for the fingers so I was quite happy when Bo seated in front.

It didn't take long to realize that all these websites probably were speaking of another island - in September Ios is empty and moonlike.

We traveled miles and miles without seeing anyone until we reached the end of the island...

... and there we expected to see the supa-dupa Homer's tomb which was unpleasant surprise. At least the view to Paros, Antiparos and Iraklia was cool.

Wikitravel was right for just one thing - the beaches in Ios are fantastic - golden and fine sands, clear waters, nobody around you.

And again, water full of colorful fish.

Thirasia

Thirasia is one of the smallest islands I have visited so far. To get there we got the port of Amoudi in Santorini and for an euro small boat took us to cape Omos in Thirasia. The island was less than 20 minutes away.

The trip to the island is great if the waves are bigger because they shake the small boat as a ride on rollercoaster.

Small public bus took us to one of the highest points on the island where we had amazing view over the caldera and to Santorini. The road down is full of fig trees and cacti. I spent some time picking figs and kidding around.

Thirasia like elsewhere on these lands doesn't offer too much but quietness, good view and again, donkey rides. The alley along the port is full of small taverns, cheap CD stands and souvenir shops. All of them get empty when the sun approaches the horizon and the tourist ships leave the island.

Thirasia is among the places where you can se the real face of the Cyclades - blue, white and lonely.

Due to the specific erosion problems it is not uncommon to see falling rocks.

Thirasia's water were full of fish. Probably baby fish are born here because the water was black of fish. We spent some time feeding it with biscuits.

Donkeys and cats are the animals that drive the travel industry in Greece. It is crystal clear – cats are adorable, but what could be said about the donkeys?

The streets of the villages in Santorini are quite narrow and usually full of stairs so the only way to get your luggage there is by donkey.

The Fira's old port is located on quite a remote place. There are two options to get down or up - cable car and donkey.

We took cable car to get down - the trip is less than 10 minutes.

On the way up we took the stairs. There are 587 stars from the port to the town. The donkey trip costs 5 euros for the donkey and takes all your courage.

If you are not part of a travel agency group the donkey owners just mount you on the back of the animal and let it go without further explanations. Mine ran up the stairs so fast that I was unable even to look back and see if Bo is behind me. The ride was shaky and this donkey was truly dedicated to get me there in no time.

It usually selected the outer side of the stairs - this revealing beautiful view over the vertical road. Unfortunately in moments like this you don't have time for poetics because you're too busy to stay on top.

My donkey also enjoyed bumping into people and other donkeys going downstairs. Many people thought I control it and I drive it towards them. Ha-ha.

Bo came long after me. He complained that his mule was absolutely lazy and it was very hard to convince it to move upwards.

There are a few things you should not miss to observe and try in Santorini.

The first is the water. The island doesn't have any springs and the houses have special tanks for water. It was common to see huge cisterns delivering water or houses being supplied.

The island is also famous for its great quality wine. The vines are inland and after an earthquake in the 50's the vineyards were more or less damaged. There are a few wine museums inland all telling to story of the unfriendly climate, the winds, the dry years and lack of water. After the museum tour visitors can try some of the wines. I loved the desert types.

Katsouni is the name of the vegetable-fruit you see below. In the beginning they taste like cucumber and are served in salads. Later when the fruit matures it becomes sweeter and tastes like melon.

Honestly speaking the sunrises in Santorini are worth watching as long as you are not too sleepy to get up on time.

Santorini is famous for its sunsets. I love sunsets so I was looking forward my new encounter! It is surprising that the pictures taken with my old unpretentious camera now appear so pretty.

Oia offers probably the best sunset view. The neighboring island Therasia makes the picture completed. Some travel agencies offer sunset boat tours but we never tried them.

Probably hundreds of people go to Oia every evening to watch the sunset. One should be there at least an hour earlier to be able to find a good view and a seat. At the end most of the people are so bored with waiting that don't really enjoy the view.

After the sun goes down everyone is trying to get away from there as soon as possible.

The village of Imerovigli is another hot-spot for sunset lovers. Imerovigli is for the high-end niche of tourists and in recent years – very popular destination for marriages. Souvenir shops, hotels and bars are more expensive here. Buying property in Imerovigli starts from 1 million.
From this point tourist can see some of the neighboring islands of Ios, Nea Kameni and Therasia.

Near the beach of Gialos to the South is yet another great place for sunset viewing. The islands stay to the right and the sun quietly dives in the calm sea. (Wow. Poetic.) Further to the South there is a huge lighthouse but unfortunately tourists are not permitted to enter.

I'm glad I let Bo to convince me to travel to Santorini by boat and I'm glad he left me convince him to take the night line from Pireos to Thera. We traveled in sleeping cabin for two and it was amazing experience.
It was my first time spending an overnight by sea.

When we got there it was a kind of Christian religious festival but I can't remember the patron name. People had fava - typical creamlike dish that tastes like beans or peas. Locals serve it with olives and tomatoes.

There are not many local young people but the oldies rock the party.

Santorini (Thera) is not big island. It is about 80 km long semicircle overlooking a caldera. The volcano exploded 3500 years ago destroying the island and creating picturesque beaches. Today Santorini has about 2000 permanent inhabitants and a few major villages. The one called Oia is located to the northern part and the view from it is one of the most distinguishable - you can see it on postcards and souvenirs.

Pyrgos is another village located inland on the island. A few centuries ago Santorini was under the heavy influence of Venice.

The north-eastern part of the island is less inhabited and touristically developed. Along the beach near Pori and Baxedes there are summer villas and houses erected illegally. The local government prohibits the construction works in the area but obviously some people manage to do it.

A view from Meso Vouno (385 m), the place of Ancient Thera. The place is accessible by car through extremely steep road with breathtaking view. Bo drove all the way up and down. If I was driving probably now you wouldn't read these lines.

Due to the lava and the geo-morphological structure of the island, its rocks seem dipped into layers of different colors and structures.

The beaches are not sandy but full of smaller or bigger stones which make the barefoot walking quite unpleasant experience.

Kamari is famous for the Black beach.

The Red beach is particularly impressive.

The path to the white beach which is not accessible by car.

Santorini doesn't have too vivid nightlife. There are restaurants, tavernas, small souvenir shops that close after midnight but still it is not a place for adventure sports and booze.

The truth is that if you rent a car you can see the whole island in a day. The landscape is great but after a few days it becomes boring so the best we could do is to jump to the next island.

The superfast ferries are a little more expensive but have less stops and doesn't waste your time to get you to the next island.

August is over, it smells like autumn in the nights and people go back to the cities. Here what we did this August:

I had a kind of small celebration this mid August and when Bo asked me what kind of present I would like to have, I just said "I want to fly with a balloon!".

So Bo double checked the options and unfortunately all of them come pricy. The flight of about 40-60 minutes will be about 500 euro which is unreasonable amount of money according to me.

We keep on looking...

This kitten was lost and it found the car while we were sitting next to it laughing at a few pool jokes. It sneaked silently, passed over the doughnut and the bottles of warm juice and went straight under the gas and the breaks.

When I saw it inside I said "See, you don't choose when a good thing will happen to you!" to which I was told "See, kittens become cats and your Hihi won't be your livin’ bunny pet any longer."

We couldn't keep it but at least I took a few pictures to remember the moment.

Stay tuned! Ce gave me the most adorable presents. They flew over London and Paris before landing in my backpack and traveling another 400 km to the west. The thing is that I want to take a picture with them and Hihi and he refuses to stay still on front of the camera.

Wakeboards

When the winter season was over I was trying to find a good replacement for the snowboard and the wakeboard was considered one of the solutions. The others were bodyboard (no waves for this around), skim (better go skating) and windsurf (quite an option). Then I broke my leg and met Bo and my *action* plans for the summer urgently needed extreme review. Now with my leg getting better we went to check the wakeboard.

Summer shouldn't be lost in indoor swimming pools, right?

Ice Age 3 Last Night

Ice Age - Down of the Dinosaurs last night turned out to be expectedly funny but somehow worn out in dialogue.

The new characters - the female squirrel Scratte and Buck, the underworld wise and brave animal actually do not help the story to develop way too much.

Sid is awesome. Scratt is traditional loser. The big elephants & Diego the cat are boring as usually. And last but not least, all funny moments can be seen in the 30" trailer.

In short: the movie is great pasatiempo for Wednesday night but don't waste your weekend on it.

#1 Murphy's Law on Protectors: The moment you finally buy a short protector, you stop falling back but you start smashing your face on the snow.

I hurt my neck quite badly on Sunday, it hurts 2nd day and I'm starting to think that maybe its more serious than I'm ready to admit. The first smash was quite ugly: my goggles' lens went out of the frame and in the beginning I thought - wow, what a jump and then I felt this pain in the neck.

I hope that by Thursday I'll be ready to rock again. As for the short protector: its awesome and its stronger at my kitten tail! ;-)

Babochki means butterflies in Russian. I just found it along with a great song by Glukoza. It was released an year ago but S.P. just send me the link to another Glukoza song and as one thing always leads to another in YouTube I bumped into the Babochki.
